Playstation branded phone to hit the market!
It was a matter of time before we saw the creation of a gaming phone by a leading company in the gaming/mobile phone industry, Sony has talked about the launch of their Playstation branded phone which will have certain gaming capabilities combined with a fully functional mobile phone.
With an estimated launch date of Christmas 2009 you can be sure it will be the most desired gift for people of all ages, Sony has said to be in partnership with Ericsson to build a phone with elements of the Sony PSP integrated into the phone itself. To get a good idea of what it will look like rumours have said that you can base the design on the Sony PSP which is on the market today, Sony workers are currently working on converting the current PSP model into a mobile phone. A member of their technical team stated that it wouldn’t be a complicated process as it already is compatible with Wi-Fi.
Other rumours have been mentioned that they may create a brand new image for the phone and integrate Playstation compatible features to the phone opposed to simply adding the mobile phone functions to the current PSP.
Although there has been mixed feedback about Sony Ericsson’s release of their first gaming phone last month, the F305, people are still awaiting confirmation of the joint venture between these two companies. Sources have stated that the relationship between Sony Ericsson and Sony has become shady since Sony gave the Walkman brand to Sony Ericsson to integrate within their mobile phones. A good indication of this was the fact that the F305 didn’t have the Playstation brand but they may be testing the market before the official Playstation phone hits the shelves.
Is Sony having second thoughts about this joint venture? Since Sony Ericsson was created back in 2001 it did suffer from a 47% drop in profits in the first three months but they have been able to stay on track for its 10% growth in the mobile phone industry during 2008 – James Marshall (head of global marketing) stated. They are currently around fifth place in the handset market as Nokia is still the market leader, closely followed by LG Electronics but could the release of the Playstation branded phone change this?
Both parties are declining to comment about any such upcoming product so it can be hard to get an idea of what’s happening in the near future. However, Rikko Sakaguchi, Sony Ericsson’s senior vice president of product and application planning has stated that there is something in the pipeline but it will remain a secret. It will be a matter of time before someone comes forward and states whether or not the release of the first Playstation mobile phone is a myth or something you can expect to see hit the market in the near future. One thing is for sure, you can expect to hear a lot more rumours about the concept, design and features before anything is officially announced.
