The Sun’s Circulation Sees Dramatic Drop
The Sun’s circulation has faced another dramatic drop below the 3million mark, coming down 6.09 per cent in February on the previous month.
The figures released by ABC, show the international news title received an average net circulation of 2,954,298. The Sun faced similar figures in December 2008, with rival tabloid, The Daily Mirror, falling 2.95 per cent to 1,326,628.
Overall the popular newspaper sector dropped 3.99 per cent in January.
The drop in circulation has hit all national morning quality newspapers. The Independent faced an average net circulation drop of 4.43 per cent month on month to 205,964.
The has been trying to boost circulation figures by offering promotions such as giving away the debut CD by the band The Mongrels on Sunday 7th March.
The newspaper market saw The Times re-launch its Saturday edition on January 24th 2009, which plummeted to 607,775, seeing a 1.57 per cent drop.
The Guardian who raised its price to 90 pence in January saw a 5.18 per cent fall in circulation to 340,238 compared to last year.
The Daily Telegraph fell 2.49 per cent to 821,943 and the Financial Times plummeted 2.75 per cent to 421,026 despite economic and financial news dominating the media.
The Daily Mail and The Express both faced a large drop, with the Mail falling to 2,218,547 and the Express falling 2.86 per cent to 735,498.
Not all was doom and gloom for the newspaper market. The Sunday publications saw a rise across most of the popular weekend publications. The Independent on Sunday rose to 0.39 per cent to 179,487, The Observer, climbed to 0.58 per cent to 430,341 and The Sunday Times rose 1.27 per cent to 1,214,254. The Sunday Telegraph was the only one to have dropped with a circulation of 595,029.
Newly appointed editor of The Evening Standard, Geordie Grieg, saw their circulation plummet 5.27 per cent in February to 277,552.
